Karla Gerard, Folk Art Fish

2nd grade students were introduced to the fabulous folk artist, Karla Gerard. We looked at various paintings she has created. She has such beautiful patterns and designs in all of her art work. Students painted paper then cut fish shapes, added simple patterns and large eyes. This was a simple project but was a great first project of the year.

While students were creating their fish, other students were painting the large background with large brushstrokes and adding details such as seaweed. Here are our finished projects.

Could you give a little more detail about how you had the kids do these? What kind of paint? Did they draw a fish shape and then paint it or did they paint a plain paper and use the painted paper to cut a fish shape? How did they get the crisp white boarders? Any details you could give would be appreciated. They are beautiful. We are working to create a fishing game booth for our school Harvest party and want use their art to make the booth.
